What is Genetic Counseling?
Genetic counseling is the process of evaluating and assessing a patient’s personal and family health history for risks associated with inherited genetic mutations. If you are considering having genetic testing at GoPath, you must meet with a genetic counselor beforehand to determine if genetic testing is right for you.
Just as your physician makes recommendations for treating health issues, a genetic counselor is an expert who uses his/her extensive knowledge to guide you through the genetic testing process and to make recommendations based on your personal and family health history. A genetic counselor is a health care professional who has an advanced degree in human genetics and/or genetic counseling and who often has many years of experience advising patients about genetic testing, helping patients navigate the testing process and assisting them with understanding the results. Genetic counselors also have a deep understanding of the concerns, uncertainty and emotions you may be feeling about genetic testing. Not only do they advise patients prior to testing, but often they are available for consultation throughout the testing process, every step of the way.
